The Biosphere Reserve El Triunfo is located in the central portion of the Sierra Madre Mountains of Chiapas. With an area of 119,177-29-00 hectares, it covers part of the municipalities of Pijijiapan, Mapastepec, Acacoyagua, Escuintla, Ángel Albino Corzo, La Concordia, Villa Corzo, Montecristo de Guerrero and Siltepec, included in the economic regions of Frailesca, Sierra, Istmo, Costa and Soconusco, on the State of Chiapas.
The Biosphere Reserve protects two of the most threatened ecosystems of Mexico: The Mountain Mesofile Forest (Cloud Forest), and the Tropical Humid Rainforest of Soconusco (Medium Forest). In it’s totality, it has 10 vegetation types and subtypes. The dominant type of vegetation in the sampling area is the Mesofile Mountain Forest, which makes it one of the most humid areas of the country, mainly in the Pacific slope. It has several types of climates, such as: tempered-humid, warm-humid, warm semi-humid, and semi-warm humid, with a recorded annual precipitation of 2,500 to 4,000 mm.
The average annual temperature is 22°C, with very low temperatures registered in the winter months.
It’s home to thousands of species of plants and animals, and it is considered the most important bird sanctuary in Mexico.
